PRE-LIM METAL BURNISHER

Sale price£9.50

The conservator's first step, before the wax.

Pre-Lim Metal Burnisher is a gently abrasive cleaning paste — from the same London maker as our Renaissance Wax — used in professional restoration to lift tarnish, oxidation and ingrained grime from metal and many fine-art surfaces. It cleans and burnishes in a single pass, with fine control and no harsh scratching.

Worked in with a soft cloth and light pressure, then buffed away once dry, it leaves surfaces clean, dry and silk-smooth — ready to be sealed and protected with Renaissance Wax. We stock it in the 65ml tin, an exact miniature of the full-size can and plenty for the brass, copper and bronze in most homes.

What makes it different

Most metal polishes rely on harsh abrasives, acids or ammonia that scratch, strip and leave a chemical residue behind. Pre-Lim works differently.

Its formulation is based on blended Neuburg silica — an exceptionally fine, naturally rounded chalk — suspended in a water and white-spirit emulsion. The result is a paste gentle enough for controlled, non-scratch cleaning, yet effective enough for the professional restoration of arms and armour, sculpture, brass and copper, ceramics, and even paintwork.

It is not a health hazard in normal use, and kept in its sealed tin at room temperature it has an excellent shelf life. As with any restoration product, test a discreet area first. Pre-Lim is not suitable for precious metals such as silver.

How to use

Take a little paste on a soft, lint-free cloth and work it over the surface with light pressure — the cleaning and burnishing happen together, and the finer the control the better the result. Leave it to air-dry for a few minutes until a chalky bloom appears, then rub it away with a clean cloth. The surface is left dry and silk-smooth. To keep metal clean and bright, finish with a thin coat of Renaissance Wax. Test a discreet area first, and keep it away from silver.

Gentle

Blended Neuburg silica gives controlled, non-scratch cleaning — enough to lift tarnish and grime, never enough to score the surface.

Precise

Worked in by hand with a soft cloth, it cleans and burnishes in a single pass, then buffs away to a dry, silk-smooth finish.

Conservation-grade

The paste professional restorers use on arms and armour, sculpture and exhibition brass and copper — then seal with Renaissance Wax for a finish that lasts.
