Renaissance Wax was formulated in the British Museum's research laboratories in the 1950s and has been the conservation world's standard protective polish ever since. A thin film, gently buffed, leaves a clear, hard, silk-smooth finish that guards against moisture, tarnish, fingerprints and everyday handling — without altering colour, grain or patina.

What makes it different

In the early 1950s, conservators at the British Museum found that every wax polish on the market — beeswax, carnauba, and the rest — contained acids that could slowly spoil the original finishes on historic collections. They rejected them all and turned to the new microcrystalline waxes refined from petroleum.

The blend that emerged has a crystalline structure far finer than any natural wax, which gives it a highly efficient resistance to moisture. It is pH-neutral and acid-free, so it won't damage even sensitive materials — it is used to protect everything from photographs and white paper to bronze monuments left out in the weather.

The film is hard, dry and glass-clear. It never yellows, never obscures fine detail, and only deepens in lustre with repeated use. It has been made in London since 1968.

How to use

Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Take a tiny amount on a soft, lint-free cloth — far less than you think — and work it over the surface in a thin, even film. Leave for ten to fifteen minutes until it hazes, then buff gently to a soft sheen. A discreet test on a small area is always wise.
